Welcome to The High Country Inn
Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just steps from downtown Newland, North Carolina, The High Country Inn offers a tranquil, warm, and authentic mountain getaway. Formerly known as The Inn at Shady Lawn, we have reimagined our identity while preserving the cozy comforts, family-run spirit, and genuine hospitality that our guests love. Whether you are here to explore scenic trails, attend an Appalachian State University event, hit the slopes at Sugar Mountain or Beech Mountain, or simply soak in the peace of the high country, we are your home away from home.
Historic Roots, Fresh Appeal
With over sixty-five years in Newland, our property has long been a landmark of hospitality in Avery County. Under the new ownership of Nathan and Suzzanah Gittner, The High Country Inn carries forward there vision and legacy, while adding new touches—upgraded bathrooms, inviting public spaces, refreshed décor—designed to delight both first-time visitors and returning friends.
Rooms That Make You Feel At Home
Each of our rooms is individually decorated, with mountain charm and modern convenience. Expect free WiFi, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, coffee & tea makers, microwaves, and mini-fridges in many units. Down comforters and soft linens help you rest easy. For families or larger groups, our multi-bed apartments provide extra space and privacy.
Thoughtful Amenities, Genuine Warmth
We offer free on-site parking, and friends travelling with pets are welcome (with prior notice). Step outside your door to unwind around our fire pit, share stories in our outdoor seating areas, or enjoy simple pleasures like a picnic or grilling under the stars.
